Drivers in Maui should gear up for some nighttime disruptions as the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) rolls out traffic signal upgrades at a key intersection. The scheduled work at the crossing of Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30) and Kūihelani Highway (Route 380) in Māʻalaea will start at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, and go through the night until 6 a.m. the following day, according to Hawai‘i Department of Transportation’s announcement.
The intersection improvement includes mounting a new mast arm which signals will be attached to, projecting the path for drivers from above. Travel lanes at the intersection will partially be closed, still keeping one through lane open on both highways as the work is being completed, as per the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
Specifically, drivers heading westbound on Kūihelani Highway will find the right through lane closed. Those moving southbound on Honoapi‘ilani Highway will see both the right through lane and the right-turn pocket out of action. Directional signage and cones will be strategically placed to guide drivers, and the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation urges caution around the work zones during these hours.
This infrastructure enhancement is part of routine improvements by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation to maintain road safety and efficiency. For those hitting the road during these hours, plan for extra travel time and be on the lookout for the crews who will be working through the night to improve the traffic signal setup. Despite the inconvenience posed, lane closures will ensure at least one lane will remain open for the duration of the work—the right through lane and right-turn pocket on Honoapi‘ilani Highway in the southbound direction are slated for closure.
