Heads up, drivers and commuters in Nāwiliwili: a stretch of Niumalu Road will be off-limits for certain hours next week. Specifically, the Department of Public Works and Maui Kupono Builders have slated the road closure from Sept. 23 to Sept. 27, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., assuming the weather plays nice, as per the County of Kaua‘i announcement.
Officials have indicated that the closure, extending from Nāwiliwili Road down to Wa‘apa Road, is for road resurfacing work. As they tear up and lay down new asphalt, these closures, albeit partial, will see motorists facing some full stop scenarios intermittently as heavy machinery will be presence and commercial vehicles are doing their thing. So, slow it down and keep a sharp eye out, advises the county.
The inconvenience, while palpable, is necessary for the roadwork, with detours and extra travel time being part of next week's commute equation. Keep in mind, if you're used to parking on this road, you'll need a new plan—no curbside spots will be up for grabs in the construction zone. To help keep the traffic mess to a minimum, flaggers will be in the zone directly helping traffic navigate the scene.
Should you need more intel on what to expect, questions about the project can be directed to Maui Kupono Builders at 808-369-1800 or to Todd Ozaki at the County of Kaua‘i at 808-241-4845.
