A hazardous incident occurred at a Meijer store in West Michigan on Tuesday, leading to four individuals being hospitalized after exposure to what appears to have been a noxious gas. According to The Detroit News, the Fruitport Township Police responded to reports of an unknown gas at the store located on Harvey Street around 4:30 p.m.
Upon their arrival, emergency services encountered a small gas cloud with a strong chlorine odor emanating from a plastic bottle found in the store's home goods department. Furthermore, investigators believe the gas was produced by chemicals commonly used in swimming pools, although the motive behind the incident seems to be theft, as police are now seeking a man seen in the vicinity where the bottle was discovered. "Investigators said they believe he placed the bottle in the department and used it to commit theft," reported The Detroit News.
The Fruitport Township Fire Department and the Muskegon County Hazardous Materials Response Team coordinated to remove the substance, allowing the store to be secured and any further risk to the public mitigated. Per ClickOnDetroit, the released gas required four persons to seek medical attention, each of whom was treated and subsequently released from the hospital.
The ongoing investigation by the Fruitport Township Police Department has prompted a call to the public for assistance in identifying the person of interest, the department has released images of the suspect and the vehicle believed to be involved in the event, according to the Fruitport Township Police Department Facebook page, this appeal extends to anyone who may have witnessed the event or who possesses video recordings that could aid the police.
The department has provided contact information for Detective Sergeant Bryan Rypstra or Deputy Chief Greg Poulson for anyone with information regarding the incident.
