Firefighters from Oakland's Local 55 had a run-in with a local deer in a compromising position yesterday, an unplanned urban safari. Residents near Station 6 alerted the fire department after spotting the animal stuck between a house and a garage with a mere 10 inches of breathing room. The deer found itself upside down and unable to escape, reports the Oakland Firefighters' Facebook page.
The initial responders from Engine 6, upon arriving at the distressing scene, knew this job required reinforcements and brought in the big guns Rescue 1. With precision and care, the Oakland firefighters tied a rope around the deer’s legs, hoisted the animal from its precarious position, and gently repositioned it right-side-up, ready to make the final tug to freedom.
Once on stable ground, the team removed the ropes before returning Bambi to its Oakland Hills home. The deer was safely extracted without harm.
The incident received attention not only for its unusual nature but also for its display of teamwork. "Thank you to the neighbors who reported this incident to OFD, and to the staff at Oakland Animal Control, this was a great team effort," praised Oakland's bravest in their official communication on the matter.
