Three students from Ocoee Middle School were hospitalized Monday after the school's air conditioning system failed, causing temperatures to rise unexpectedly during class hours. According to WFTV, the incident began at 7 a.m., with firefighters stating that the three students sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the malfunction.
With some students struggling to focus in the sweltering heat, the school's administration and Orange County Public Schools had to begin also to provide additional water breaks quickly. "Some areas of the campus are getting cooler," Michael Ollendorff, a spokesman for the school district, stated, as per WFTV. He also noted that students were being moved to the parts of the campus with restored AC functionality. Meanwhile, a contractor was reportedly actively on-site to address the AC issue.
Orange County Public Schools reassured parents and guardians that the situation was under control and that alternate arrangements for student comfort had been made. This included the option for parents to take their children out of school for the remainder of the day. According to ClickOrlando, OCPS stated, "Students can be checked out for the day if a parent or guardian is available to pick them up."
