Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has recently declared the 10-year sentencing of Omar Evaristo Valenzuela Arella, perpetrator in a significant drug case involving the possession of lethal narcotics including fentanyl, which is increasingly implicated in overdose deaths across the nation. Arella's conviction comes amid a heightened focus on the opioid crisis, with authorities emphasizing the toxic potential of substances like fentanyl entering communities.
Following an elaborate operation by local and federal law enforcement agencies, Arella was apprehended back in November 2022; a raid on his Central Phoenix abode uncovered an alarming quantity of illicit substances—25 pounds of methamphetamine, four pounds of heroin, and an equal amount of fentanyl powder, alongside two firearms and cash totaling $10,000, as per details reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
After the jury's verdict in July of this year, Arella faced several felony charges: one count of Sale or Transportation of a Dangerous Drug, one count of Possession of a Dangerous Drug for Sale, two counts of Possession of Narcotic Drugs for Sale, all Class Two Felonies, and finally, one count of Misconduct Involving Weapons, a Class Four Felony. "Fentanyl is not just a drug— it’s a poison. Every grain that makes its way into our community puts lives on the line,” emphasized Mitchell regarding the severity of the fentanyl crisis and its implications on local neighborhoods, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
