An Orlando Police Department officer was involved in a collision on Tuesday night while responding to a call for emergency backup. According to ClickOrlando, the crash occurred around 11:10 p.m. near the intersection of John Young Parkway and Old Winter Garden Road.
The officer was driving a patrol car that entered the intersection on a red traffic left-turn arrow, attempting to respond to an urgent situation. At that time, a 2024 Chevy Equinox, driven by a 63-year-old Winter Park man, proceeded into the intersection with a green signal, the WESH report detailed. Though both drivers attempted to avoid the collision their efforts were unsuccessful.
Florida Highway Patrol, who are currently investigating the incident, stated that both vehicles tried to stop but contact was inevitable. The patrol car hit the front left of the Chevy Equinox, resulting in minor injuries to both the officer and the other driver. The latter did not require hospitalization, but the officer was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
As of now, neither the identities of the involved parties have been released nor has the OPD provided further details regarding the incident or the officer's condition as it stands post-collision.
