Orlando has seen recent unrest following a weekend encounter between the Orlando Police Department and pro-Palestinian protesters. According to a report by WFTV, bodycam footage released by the OPD displays a confrontation involving an officer pushing a demonstrator to the ground. The incident occurred at Lake Eola, near a Publix, where demonstrators reportedly argued with another individual with opposing views on Saturday afternoon.
The officer's response, which the OPD claims was to keep the two parties separate for safety, has sparked controversy and instigated a use-of-force investigation. A bystander captured brief moments of the encounter, showing some demonstrators approaching the officer immediately after instead of solely checking on the welfare of the pushed protestor, as some reports suggested. Within the scope of the unresolved disturbance, eight arrests were made on various charges, according to a report by FOX 35 News.
One of those detained, Lamia Moukaddam, defended her actions in an interview with FOX 35 News. "I pulled out my phone just to be able to record this. And as I'm going to try to record, one of the sergeants on the bikes, as you can see, puts his arm out, and shoves me so hard that I fly multiple feet," she explained. This statement contradicts earlier accounts by the OPD that described the protesters as lunging toward officers.
The OPD released bodycam footage to promote transparency during the investigation. They reaffirmed their commitment to keeping peaceful gatherings safe while noting the demonstrators' heightened emotions.
