
Community members using the Blackstone River bike path were confronted with a disturbing sight when an older white male, nude, approached female walkers early this morning. Cumberland Police, with assistance from Lincoln Police units, responded to the call and subsequently arrested 66-year-old Thomas Belanger from Pawtucket. The caller positively identified him as the suspect. It is believed that Belanger has been implicated in several such incidents in Cumberland and Lincoln over past weeks.
Upon being apprehended, Belanger is set to be charged with indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, and the possession of child pornography. As the investigation continues, Cumberland Police have requested the public's assistance for further information. Issuing a plea to those who might have had similar encounters or witnessed any suspicious activities involving the described suspect or his distinctive bicycle, as shown in a picture attached to a Facebok post by the department.
Chief Benson spoke on the significance of the bike path as a local asset, stating, "The bike path should be a place for community members and families to enjoy and to not have to worry about being accosted by individuals like this." He commended the person who reported the incident as well as the police staff for their swift action, as stated on the Cumberland Police Department's announcement. Emphasizing his hope that the suspect's arrest would restore the community's sense of security, especially in the fall when many people use the recreational area.
