A high school community is in mourning after a 17-year-old student died following a medical emergency at a wrestling practice. Freddy Espinal, a junior at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, suffered the incident while with his wrestling team, described as a joint effort between Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and Saugus High School.
Grief has gripped the students and staff at the school, who learned of the tragic event late Sunday night. The principal, Brooke Randall, shared memories of Freddy, remembering him as a "kind, young man," who had an "infectious smile," Boston.com reported.
Special grief counselors and comfort dogs were posted on Monday, as the school extended support to those needing to cope with the loss. The school is planning a memorial service expected to take place next week, according to statements made by the principal. Meanwhile, a NBC Boston report indicates a GoFundMe campaign organized by wrestling coach Wayne Moda had already accumulated over $43,000 to support Espinal's family.
Moda paid tribute to Espinal's dedication to wrestling, saying it was "by far the hardest sport in the world," reminiscent of Navy SEAL training. Despite the challenges, Espinal stuck with it, his coach said, growing from an inexperienced freshman to a potential breakout athlete. In fact, Espinal had decided to focus exclusively on wrestling this year, stepping away from the football field where he also made his mark during his freshman and sophomore years. "Freddy was 100% one of those kids," Moda told Boston.com.
Described by Moda as "a larger-than-life personality," Freddy's passion wasn't confined to the wrestling mat. He cherished his family, humored his coach with antics, and was unfailingly committed to his friends and teammates. The Peabody Football Boosters, reminiscing on Espinal's time with the football team, said in a Facebook post that "Freddy will be missed terribly by all of us and always in our hearts," as reported by NBC Boston. The exact cause of the tragic medical emergency is still under investigation.
