As Pittsburgh steels itself for a weekend under the influence of an upper-level low, the skies above offer a reminder that calm is often fleetingly crowned by the storm. Such is the message from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh (NWS Pittsburgh), forecasting scattered showers for the day and a continued unsettled weather pattern until early next week. Despite the showers and potential for light rain, the temperatures are expected to remain mild, a silver lining for residents hoping to enjoy the last seasonably warm weather.
It is a gentle choreography of clouds and light, where sunbeams might fleetingly dance through the morning, especially south and east of Pittsburgh, but are expected to be obscured as the day ages. The remnants of Helene fuel the current weather saga, centered over Kentucky and swinging moisture northeastward. Pittsburghers west of I-79 find themselves likely hosts to the afternoon's scattered showers, "with highest probability west of I-79 coincident with the better deep layer moisture," according to the NWS Pittsburgh.
As the calendar prepares to flip a leaf, the weather, too, tosses and turns. Come Sunday, the heart of the upper low is anticipated to reside over eastern Kentucky, increasing rainfall chances, albeit with light showers that maintain a parched hope for umbrellas left at home. A stasis looms with rainfall probabilities teetering around 50% to 60%. Monday continues the motif, with the NWS Pittsburgh predicting rainfall chances in the forecast through much of Monday with a focus along the terrain and east, again dependent on the speed and track of the low-pressure system.
The affected aviation sector is also cautioned, with a forecast from the NWS Pittsburgh expecting winds will continue to decrease overnight and become light. Continued low-level moisture can potentially distress visibility with MVFR/IFR ceilings at various terminals. However, given the transient dry slot overhead, optimism for improved conditions from 10Z to 12Z Saturday is on the horizon. Pittsburgh's steel birds thus find respite in the forecasted reprieve before the weather, once again, calls for consideration with showers anticipated on Sunday.
