Heads up, commuters: major disruptions are coming to the Glenwood Bridge in Pittsburgh this October. The Department of Public Works has announced a two-part closure to facilitate concrete repairs. According to Allegheny County's Press Release, southbound/outbound traffic will be blocked from the evening of October 13 until the evening of October 18. The northbound/inbound side will experience similar restrictions starting on October 20 and ending on October 25.
In response to the closures, the Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) has mapped out detours for its 56-Lincoln Place bus route. The detour will guide buses along Johnston Avenue, Desdemona Avenue, Imogene Road, and other streets to circumvent the closed bridge. PRT has been proactive in rerouting and customer communication, urging riders with questions to reach out through their hotline, X (formerly Twitter), or online chat. Notably, during the northbound closure, regular vehicle inbound traffic will detour via East Carson Street (Route 837), the Hot Metal Street, and the Hot Metal Street Bridge. In contrast, southbound traffic will be allowed on the Glenwood Bridge using one lane.
Six bus stops in each direction will be taken out of service during their respective closures. The affected areas include significant stops along Second Avenue, impacting several daily commuters. According to the same press release, this disruption is necessary for crews from Mosites Construction to perform steel, deck, sidewalk, drainage, and approach pavement repairs, along with replacement of expansion dams, painting, and efforts to address erosion issues as part of the broader $4.4 million preservation effort.
