In Plymouth, a new event is making some noise—and it's all about dialing it down for inclusivity. Dubbed the Dialed Down Disco, this sensory-friendly bash is all set to welcome a wide range of attendees, from the neurodiverse to those just looking for a different kind of dance experience. Slated for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Plymouth Community Center, it promises an evening where silence is golden—and you control the volume.
At the core of the Dialed Down Disco, silent disco technology takes the stage. People can groove to their own beat with wireless headphones offered at the event, each with individual volume controls and a choice between three different music channels, according to a release from the City of Plymouth. The typical disco flare of strobe lights and booming speaker systems will be absent, ensuring a comfortable environment for all party-goers.
The event's offerings are tailored to provide a sensory-sensitive atmosphere. In an effort to foster an enjoyable experience without the sensory overload, no overhead music will be blasted through speakers and accessories like sensory bins and sunglasses will be available for attendees. If needed, participants can also make use of quiet break areas, ensuring that everyone has a space to recharge if the dance floor becomes overwhelming.
Recreation Supervisor Paul Pearson conveyed the city's anticipation in broadening their sensory-friendly event lineup. "We’re excited to continue expanding our sensory-friendly programming in Plymouth," Pearson shared with the press. "We have offered a variety of sensory-friendly activities over the last couple years and look forward to continue providing inclusive experiences for all community members." This initiative reflects a growing trend in community recreation to include events catering to the sensitivities and preferences of a diverse populace.
Those interested in joining the Dialed Down Disco can snag tickets for $15. Tickets are available online, or wannabe dancers can call the Plymouth Parks and Recreation Department at 763-509-5200 to secure a spot on the dance floor.
