Yesterday, an early morning blaze has caused extensive damage to The Wealthy Store, a popular clothing store in Oak Park, along with impacting nearby businesses. The fire, which WWJ Newsradio 950 reports erupted around 3 a.m. at the shopping center on 9 Mile Rd., led to firefighter response but ultimately gutted The Wealthy Store’s business interior. Charlie Langton from WWJ Newsradio 950 described the site stating, "The fire completely destroyed the clothing store; the inside is nonexistent now."

The fire also did some damage to adjacent establishments, with 'Nerd Out', a neighboring toy store, seemingly escaping unscathed. The cause of the fire remains unknown, as investigations by authorities are still in their early stages. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Jon Berz, the owner of Woodshed Studio which records indie music next door to The Wealthy Store, expressed his dismay at the impact of the fire on his establishment: "It looks like we’re going to be closed for a while because the ceiling collapsed, there’s water damage, smoke damage, and all that."

The Wealthy Store, established in the area since 2016 according to locals, has been a fixture of the Oak Park shopping landscape. Rashad Hosea, the owner of The Wealthy Brand, reacted to the incident with a palpable sense of loss, comparable to a death in the family, as he woke to the news of the devastation. Hosea told WXYZ that his venture, which started in 2016 and housed at the Oak Park location since 2018, was definitely my baby.

The fire's impact extends beyond the immediate physical destruction. Neighboring business owner Edward Sertage, whose Woodshed Studios has served artists for 30 years, will face financial setbacks due to water and smoke damage. Sertage remarked on the community development he's witnessed and lamented the fire's occurrence, saying, “It was good to see them successful and, you know, I really feel for them, for us I’m not gonna say it’s an easy road... but for them, that’s a total loss." In the interim, The Wealthy Store has assured that it will continue operations through its website, asking customers to anticipate delays as they process outstanding orders. Hosea has also hinted at a future that may involve rebuilding or relocating, despite the heartbreak of the current loss, according to WXYZ.
