Three Mexican nationals have been detained by Port Huron police for allegedly illegally entering the United States from Canada, as was first reported by local authorities. The suspects were spotted crossing the St. Clair River from Canada using a raft and were later seen running with duffel bags on Michigan Street, near Grand River Avenue, in Port Huron, according to The Detroit News.
Yesterday's incident involved coordination between Port Huron police and the U.S. Coast Guard, which provided the initial alert. Confirmed by law enforcement authorities, the three men abandoned their makeshift vessel near the mouth of the Black River, a detail also mentioned by an Audacy report. Subsequently, police apprehended the trio and handed them over to U.S. Border Patrol for processing on charges of illegal entry to the United States.
In a statement obtained by Mid-Michigan NOW, Port Huron police urged the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. They emphasized that public cooperation plays a critical role in maintaining the safety of the local community. The men's identities have not been released, but they were described as Mexican citizens to various news outlets.
Public officials have urged anyone with additional information regarding the case, or other suspicious border activities, to reach out to the Port Huron Police Department. Contacts include direct calls to the station, the Major Crimes Unit, or through a tip line, encouraging anonymous reporting. These arrests add to a recent pattern of individuals attempting to cross the U.S.-Canada border via the St. Clair River, with previous arrests noted in July and February of last year involving individuals from various countries, as reported by The Detroit News.
