The National Weather Service's Portland Office is forecasting a mostly sunny day ahead with temperatures climbing to a comfortable high near 87 degrees, in what seems like an extended farewell to summer as we step into September. Despite the early morning update revealing a humidity of 82% and a dew point of 57°F, the wind speed is expected to remain light and variable, as reported by the NWS.
In the evening, clouds will cover the sky, leading to an overcast Labor Day with a cooler high of around 74 degrees. While this provides a break from the recent heat, a light southerly breeze might affect outdoor picnics. Residents should keep a light jacket handy as nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to around 60 degrees. The week will feature calm winds and mild evenings, ideal for late-summer night walks.
As we look further into the week, don't stow away the sunscreen just yet, because the sun plans to make a vigorous comeback. The upcoming Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be very hot, with temperatures reaching 93 and 96 degrees, respectively. Remember to stay hydrated and find ways to cool off, whether it’s staying in the shade, using a fan, or visiting a friend with good air conditioning.
For those who enjoy cooler temperatures, you'll have to wait until Friday and Saturday, when the NWS forecasts "mostly sunny" skies with highs dropping back to the mid-80s. While still warm, it's a relief from the high 90s. Considering how it could be worse, the weather seems like an unending roller coaster of highs and lows.
