In a strategic move to tackle the imminent threats of climate change and rising sea levels, PortMiami has been selected for a substantial state grant aimed at enhancing its resiliency against natural disasters. The grant, amounting to $19.5 million, originates from the Resilient Florida Program and is earmarked for a significant infrastructure project at Berth 10.
According to a statement from Miami-Dade County, the designated funds will be used to construct an upgraded, elevated bulkhead at Berth 10. This upgrade seeks to protect the adjoining land from flooding and also to mitigate potential damages associated with sea level rise, “This funding from the Resilient Florida Program is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding Miami-Dade County’s future,” Mayor Daniella Levine Cava remarked on the county's strategy and economic plan.
The planned project at PortMiami involves replacing the existing shoreline with a new bulkhead system that includes stormwater improvements and a strategically designed submerged toe wall expected to promote the stability of the living shoreline. Additionally, these enhancements will serve to shield the Port's crucial infrastructure components, such as a vital cargo road, cargo yards, and an electrical substation, from the detrimental effects of floodwaters.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava emphasized the project's significance, stating in Miami-Dade County website that it will "strengthen our infrastructure, protect jobs, and support sustainable economic growth for the region," while aligning with the broader initiative of creating a resilient Miami-Dade. The improvements at PortMiami are considered essential in preventing operational disruptions during major hurricanes or storm surges.
Recognized as a leading hub for both cruises and international trade, PortMiami contributes significantly to the local economy, injecting an estimated $61 billion annually and underpinning over 340,000 jobs in the region. With this substantial financial investment, Miami-Dade demonstrates its proactive approach to addressing present and future environmental challenges head-on, while continuing to champion its role as a key global gateway.
