The Nevada Department of Transportation has hit the three-quarter mark on the Pyramid Highway Improvement Project. Launched in May of 2023, the initiative is intended to widen and enhance a two and a half mile stretch of this key corridor. As reported by Nevada Department of Transportation, the construction stands at 75% completion and is tracking according to its original schedule.
Recent developments have seen substantial progress, particularly between Queen Way and Los Altos Parkway where crews added a new third lane for each direction. This upgrade is crucial for a route that supports the commutes of an estimated 50,000 vehicles a day. Despite these improvements, motorists are to expect ongoing construction north of Los Altos Parkway, including work on utilities, drainage, and erosion control, as per the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Drivers navigating the Pyramid Highway, specifically the stretch between Queen Way and Golden View Drive, will need to adapt to altered traffic conditions through summer 2025. There will be narrowed lanes, overnight lane closures, and reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of both the workers on site and the travelers passing through these active work zones.
The $66 million project boasts an impressive scope, aiming to transform one and a half miles of the Pyramid Highway from four lanes to six between specific junctions and modernize another three quarters of a mile. A host of enhancements are anticipated, such as a shared use path, bike lanes, and smart traffic technologies. The Nevada Department of Transportation is partnering with a variety of stakeholders, including the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County and the City of Sparks, to see this venture to completion.
Funding partnerships are as diverse as the project's objectives, with a significant $23 million coming from a federal BUILD grant.
