Four Hanamā‘ulu residents found themselves in need of rescue while swimming at Nukoli‘i Beach in Wailua this past Sunday, but thanks to the quick action of first responders, the situation ended safely. Details from a press release issued by the County of Kaua‘i convey that the Kaua‘i Fire Department, along with personnel from the Līhu‘e and Kapa‘a fire stations, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and the Kaua‘i Police Department, were all involved in the response.
The report of the swimmers in distress was made shortly after 6:20 p.m., and rescuers managed to quickly, but carefully attend on scene before 6:30 p.m. What they discovered was a precarious scene: two adults and two children, holding hands to likely maintain a lifeline, found themselves adrift about 100 yards from the shore. The lifeguards used rescue surfboards to effectively bring all four individuals back safely to dry land.
There were no injuries reported following the incident, which might speak to the swift teamwork employed by the various agencies. Each swimmer was assessed by American Medical Response personnel, who released them following the check-up, according to the same county press release.
The scene at Nukoli‘i Beach was cleared shortly before 7 p.m., with Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 receiving an all-clear signal. This incident, which unfolded for less than an hour, serves as a reminder to always be prepared to safely enjoy the island's natural offerings.
