Travelers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport faced significant delays this Sunday due to an equipment malfunction affecting various systems. The Airport Authority announced just before 2:30 PM that an investigation was underway. During this disruption, airport staff had to assist customers manually, and passengers were advised to check with their airlines for flight statuses and prepare for delays.

Initial reports from CBS 17 indicated that there were eight flight delays by 2:50 PM, a number that nearly doubled to 15 by 5:45 PM. Frustration was clear among passengers like Sara Freshley, who faced multiple delays while trying to return home to Maine. Her first flight from Raleigh to Philadelphia was delayed, and then she was rerouted to Charlotte, which was also delayed by at least an hour.

While official statements claimed that the issues did not affect flight arrivals and departures, as reported by WRAL, was different. Many travelers experienced delays and disruptions, especially in the parking lots, where some took over half an hour to exit. This situation was criticized on social media as shameful and unacceptable, especially since parking fees also had to be collected manually.

By 4:30 pm, Raleigh-Durham International Airport officials announced that systems were gradually coming back online, addressing issues with terminal technology, parking facilities, and the internal phone system. Airport staff continued to help manually where needed, working to restore a sense of normalcy.

As per an email from Raleigh-Durham International Airport officials cited by The News & Observer, normal travel conditions were restored before 5 p.m. The spokesperson for Raleigh-Durham International Airport advised travelers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, hopefully marking the end of troubles for passengers, staff, and all those entwined in the day's events.
