An ongoing legal battle in Portage County has sparked public interest after two Ravenna residents, Zephaniah Robinson and Jack Metcalf, filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski and three of his deputies over wrongful drug charges. The Portager reported that the false charges stemmed from a traffic stop on August 29, 2023. The sheriff's deputies claimed they found a substance that tested positive for cocaine, but later, lab results confirmed it was baking soda.

According to a lawsuit cited by WKYC, the deputies involved, Sean Bradley, Robert Paolucci, and Anthony Zappone, are accused of fabricating evidence. The incident led to the men's jailing and facing serious criminal charges, and the aftermath caused them to lose their jobs and struggle with finding employment due to their arrest records.

Responding to these allegations, Eddie Sipplen, the attorney for Robinson and Metcalf, said during a FOX8 interview, "They perpetrated a fraud upon the prosecutor’s office. They were the ones who presented the information to the grand jury and they were the ones who lied to the grand jury about what they found."

The lawsuit goes further, alleging a larger issue of civil rights violations and reckless conduct by the sheriff's department. In comments obtained by The Portager, Sipplen criticized the sheriff's office for a lack of proper training and pointed out the discriminatory assumptions made towards young Black individuals. "Common sense should have told them the substance was Arm and Hammer air freshener, not cocaine," Sipplen remarked. These statements echo the sentiment raised by Portage County Common Pleas Court Judge Laurie Pittman, who underscored the need for better officer training following the ordeal in November.

The case is an apparent stain on the reputation of the Portage County Sheriff's Department, which, as reported by WKYC, has been marred by recent controversies, including Zuchowski's comments on social media that prompted an emergency meeting by the Portage County NAACP. Despite the charges against Robinson and Metcalf being dropped, the lawsuit demands unspecified monetary damages and calls for policy reforms to prevent future misconduct. Questions directed at the sheriff's office about the lawsuit were deferred to Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci, who declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.
