Rockwall, Texas has recently achieved a significant milestone with Governor Greg Abbott's announcement that the city has been designated a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. Abbott praised Rockwall for its commitment to fostering the local music industry and contributing to the state's economic growth, as reported yesterday by the Texas Governor's Office website. The certification follows a multi-step process under the Music Friendly Texas program, initiated by the Texas Music Office (TMO) to cultivate music business-related economic development.
"Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state," Governor Abbott emphasized, highlighting that the certification puts effort into attracting and developing a local music industry that subsequently boosts job creation and economic growth. According to the same release, the music industry in Texas is currently accountable for more than 192,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs, generating more than $26 billion in annual economic activity.
Local politicians and community leaders have expressed their excitement over the designation, with State Senator Bob Hall celebrating Rockwall's vibrant cultural spirit and the enhancement of its role as a hub for community engagement and economic growth. Meanwhile, State Representative Justin Holland, who is also a musician, relayed his pride in seeing his city recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. This sentiment was echoed by Rockwall Mayor Trace Johannesen, who described the city as the "Free Live Music Capital of North Texas," a title the city will seek to further by joining the network of more than 60 Music Friendly Texas Certified Communities, as per the Texas Governor's Office website.
The ceremonial stamp of approval will be given during an event scheduled for September 13 at San Jacinto Plaza, featuring city officials and TMO representatives. For those interested, more details can be found on the event's Facebook page, and inquiries may be directed to Jodi Willard, Director of Tourism at Visit Rockwall. This development marks Rockwall as the 64th Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, joining a growing list of Texas cities leveraging their musical talent to strengthen community ties and foster economic prosperity.
The TMO has been a pivotal force since 1990, dedicated to the economic development of Texas music businesses, musicians, and communities. With over 60 partners across the state, they serve as an information hub for the industry and also as a liaison among music businesses, government offices, and to attract vital music industry investments into the Lone Star State.
