Gunfire erupted in a Romulus Middle School parking lot following a high school football game late Friday night, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement and school officials. As reported by ClickOnDetroit, the shots were heard at 9:37 p.m. after several fights broke out among attendees. The Romulus police located and detained several individuals, ages 13 to 17, though no injuries were reported in the incident.
In the wake of the altercation, Romulus Community Schools Superintendent Benjamin Edmonson detailed the district's intent to enact stringent legal repercussions and safety protocols. "In the event they are RCS students, we are preparing to take the harshest, legal measures possible including expulsion and prosecution," Edmonson stated, as per a report by FOX 2 Detroit. The subsequent varsity football game will introduce enhanced security measures, including mandatory identification checks for students and the requirement that middle and high school students be accompanied by a legal guardian over the age of 30.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, the event has pushed school officials to not only address immediate safety concerns but also to work in collaboration with other educational institutions. "This incident is beyond being just a problem for RCS; this is a societal problem. We are going to proactively contact the leadership at Summit Academy and Metro Charter to work in conjunction and collaboration, as we share the same families," Edmonson announced, signaling a community-wide approach to the issue.
The Romulus police urge anyone with information to reach out to Detective Sergeant Otter at 734-942-6857, reminding that callers may remain anonymous. Edmonson emphasizes that the challenges of ensuring security at school events are a societal issue, one that demands a collective effort and understanding, “Any measures taken may prolong your entrance into the game and we certainly remind you why we are doing this….everyone deserves a safe, orderly experience,” he reiterated, as per Audacy report.
