The City of Roswell and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) have teamed up to host an open house and offer the latest details on the Historic Gateway project. This project targets the section of SR9/South Atlanta Street between SR 120 (Marietta Highway) and the bridge over the Chattahoochee River, a notorious spot for traffic snarls and accidents in the Atlanta area.
The public can get a closer look at the proposed changes during an open house scheduled for October 8, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church located at 675 Riverside Road. Unlike traditional meetings, there won't be a formal presentation; instead, staff will be available to discuss the updates and field questions, according to the City of Roswell. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual Q&A session is planned for October 10, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. Residents eager to learn more should visit www.RoswellGov.com/Gateway at the time of the event for the access link.
Public opinion is vital for GDOT, which will be accepting public comments on the project details through their website up until October 22, 2024. "Council and I have been working with GDOT over the past couple of years to tweak the design of this project, and we have been able to improve it for our residents," said Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson in a statement made by the City of Roswell. Wilson added, "The improvements to this section of Atlanta Street will monumentally improve safety for drivers and create a multi-use trail down to the river for pedestrians. It’s a transformative project for one of the gateways into our City."
The current traffic pattern is confusing and dangerous, featuring a three-lane road with a center 'reversible' lane that changes direction throughout the day. This leads to frequent crashes, injuries, and traffic backups. The redesign aims to enhance traffic flow, reduce the frequency and severity of crashes, and improve pedestrian pathways. The plan is to eliminate the reversible lane and create a four-lane divided highway from Roswell Town Square to the Chattahoochee River, integrating roundabouts at key intersections to manage traffic flow smoothly.
