Last week, a routine call transformed into a substantial firearms bust for Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies, while responding to an incident in Herald, identified and subsequently apprehended two individuals, Rafael Mejia and Uvaldo Flores, for the negligent discharge of a firearm. Shots ringing out upon their arrival prompted an investigation which led to the discovery of three guns inside a hastily departing vehicle, as recounted by an official statement on the Sacramento County Sheriff's Facebook page.
Upon pulling over the vehicle, the driver, who was not named, indicated the presence of at least one firearm inside. After searching the vehicle, authorities found not one, but three firearms. Both Mejia and Flores were charged with negligent discharge of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. In an announcement surprising to some, both were later released from custody; Mejia and Flores were granted Own Recognizance Release and Bail, as reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.
Officials have not currently shared further details about the motives behind the discharge or whether the individuals had any priors concerning firearms. With the investigation ongoing, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office continues to urge the public to report any illegal firearms activity. Also, community members with more information about the case involving Mejia and Flores or any other illegal gun-related activities are encouraged reaching out to the Sheriff’s Office.
