A Salmonella outbreak has been traced back to eggs sold in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The outbreak has sickened 65 individuals across 9 states, with a significant number of the cases reported from Wisconsin (42) followed by Illinois (11). An alarming aspect of this outbreak is, the strain of Salmonella is resistant to multiple commonly prescribed antibiotics, including nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin, which could complicate treatment strategies, according to a warning issued by the CDC.
Serious enough to require hospitalization, 24 people have found themselves in medical care, although, no deaths have been linked to the outbreak yet. The CDC has pinpointed Milo's Poultry Farms LLC as the source of the contaminated eggs after FDA tests confirmed the presence of the outbreak strain in the company’s packing facility and hen laying area. In response to these findings, Milo's Poultry Farms LLC issued a recall on September 6 for all eggs sold under their brand as well as those sold with the "Tony's Fresh Market" label.
Given the scope of this incident, consumers in the affected areas are urged to check their egg cartons; the recall encompasses all egg types, sizes, and expiration dates. Stores and restaurants in the impacted states are also advised to review their inventories and ensure the removal of these potentially dangerous products. As the authorities scramble to contain the outbreak, the health of many remains in the balance, highlighting the consequences of lapses in food safety protocols.
For individuals who possess eggs from the implicated brands, they are advised to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase. The CDC also recommends that consumers and restaurants follow safe handling and cooking practices for eggs and egg-containing foods to minimize the risk of Salmonella. As a cautionary reminder, symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and in this particular outbreak, treatment may require different antibiotic choices, due to the strain's resistance to certain medications.
