In a gesture of gratitude and celebration, SamTrans is set to provide free fares on September 16 for Rider Appreciation Day. This one-day promotional lift is SamTrans' way of saying thanks to its commuters while also spotlighting the notable Reimagine SamTrans initiative. The public transportation agency garnered the distinguished APTA 2024 Outstanding Transit System accolade for its remarkable transformation and efforts in enhancing ridership post-COVID, according to SamTrans.

Monday's no-charge travel incentive covers all SamTrans services, including the fixed routes, Ride Plus, and paratransit. However, the latter depends on same-day availability and cannot be assured. For this event, patrons of the transit system will be exempt from the hassle of purchasing through the SamTrans Mobile app or the Clipper system, offered in the spirit of ridership thanks.

The Reimagine SamTrans campaign has been pivotal in the region. It has unveiled refreshed bus routes, upped service to prime destinations, guaranteed 15-minute frequencies for select routes, and extended its service reach on weekends and evenings. This overhaul also introduced Ride-Plus, an on-demand microtransit service, to areas within the county. The blueprint for this upgrade was drafted amidst the pandemic's initial chaos, with a clear aim to adapt and enhance the transit network for the evolving needs of the community.

Since summer 2022, following exhaustive data analysis and community input, Reimagine SamTrans has been implemented over four distinct phases, focusing on key upgrades leading to a nearly 20% uplift in ridership. This resurgence brought patronage back to the levels observed before the quarantine period. Supported by the voter-approved Measure W half-cent sales tax back in 2018, SamTrans' network augmentation is the most considerable of its recent kind. It wasn’t just about quantities; SamTrans’ evolution also involved embracing a 100% zero-emission fleet transition, marking noteworthy strides toward sustainability.
