The Department of Arts & Culture of San Antonio is dishing out grants to 30 local artists. This reaffirms the city's commitment to nurturing its creative spirits.
The cash flow, making waves to the tune of $7,500 or $15,000 per artist, is part of the city's Artist Grants program. "This new tiered approach allows us to support individual artists as well as projects with significant scale including collaborations, collectives or ensembles," explained Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones in an announcement by the department on the city's official website. She added with enthusiasm, "We are excited about the diverse and dynamic programming that will result and invite all to discover the talented artists we have in our community." The grants are pumped into the local arts scene to foster the production of fresh, original art that is set to publicly debut over the next 18 months.
Digging into the specifics, the grantees cover a ground of disciplines, spanning Literary Arts, Media Arts, Multi-Disciplinary Arts, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. The artists' roster is a roll-call of the city's vibrant and diverse talent pool, including names like Amy Abrigo, Andrei Renteria, and Bonnie Ilza Cisneros among others. These creatives are set to bring their projects to life, enriching San Antonio with their artistic endeavors.
Taking a page from the latest playbook on equitable practice, these grants didn't just waltz into the artists' bank accounts. The program ran a tight ship with a competitive application process where submissions were appraised by a panel of industry connoisseurs, according to the City of San Antonio. Additionally, extra equity impact points were dished out to artists from historically disadvantaged communities or those who crank their artistic gears in such neighborhoods, as outlined by San Antonio's Equity Atlas.
The Department of Arts & Culture has compiled detailed profiles of the awarded artists in the San Antonio Artist Registry. More than just a list, it’s a digital tapestry featuring over 1,300 artists from diverse backgrounds and mediums, offering a vibrant snapshot of San Antonio's creative community.
