San Antonio took a major step toward clean energy, initiating a sizable solar project. Starting with six out of a planned 42 municipal buildings, this $30 million effort has just seen the light of day, with solar panels now soaking up the Texas sun, according to an announcement from Mayor Ron Nirenberg. "This initiative sets a national example for an innovative approach in expanding rooftop solar through municipal building installation," the Mayor proclaimed in a statement obtained by the City's website. They're expected to slash an impressive 11 percent off the City’s building electricity consumption.

On September 5, the community gathered for an event at the Southwest Service Center to celebrate this leap into renewable energy, and the center now sports solar canopies that not only harvest energy but also provide covered parking. With a 653kW system that's expected to offset roughly 70 percent of the center’s annual power use. Douglas Melnick, the city's Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the role of these projects in achieving the net zero goal spelled out in their Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, "Sunshine is abundant in San Antonio, and it’s exciting to harness that to bring about climate action and financial savings for our City," he explained in remarks included on the City's news release.

The first phase of San Antonio's solar project is already making an impact with 1.29MW of solar capacity distributed across locations like Jean Yates Community Center and Southside Lions Senior Center, among others. All laid out as a part of their 2040 Zero Net Energy Goal for municipal buildings. The project is being developed by Big Sun Solar, the San Antonio-based company developing the program, in partnership with the City, under a services agreement.

Big Sun Solar's Co-founder and President, Jason Pittman, detailed the extensive preparations that have brought this vision into reality, "Achieving this level of progress required extensive planning, a strong focus on project management, and coordination with various City departments to ensure minimal disruption to their operations," Pittman said as per the official news release. For more information on the development can get enlightened via the Office of Sustainability’s website, which houses details on the project status for each facility, encompassing both past achievements and the solar-drenched roadmap ahead.
