The San Antonio Spurs Youth Basketball League (SYBL) is tipping off a celebration that's been 35 years in the making. With a mission to foster local youth and keep them on a straight trajectory, the SYBL reflects on over three decades of sportsmanship and development. The nod to the program's longevity isn't just about longevity; it's about the impact. "We didn’t have much growing up in the West Side," SYBL coach Jaime Rios told KSAT. "You know, we had basketball, the Spurs league and we had school. That’s what we had."
Indeed, it's these very roots that have helped the league to not only survive but thrive. Spurs Sports and Entertainment CEO RC Buford believes that a child's love for basketball can start young and, indeed, has witnessed it with the league. "I like listening back on all the stories that now some of our coaches are in here coaching that played in the league," he explained in a statement obtained by KSAT. On the docket for the anniversary celebrations is a mix of current and yesteryear festivities, including basketball challenges and a commemorative photo station, as reported by FOX San Antonio.
The event took place at the George Gervin Academy, a fitting venue to pay homage to the Spurs legend and continue inspiring the next generation of athletes. But it's not just about the game; it's also about the gains off the court. Yolanda Rodgers, SYBL's Director of Community Sports, reminisced to KSAT about getting her shirt signed by Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. "It just gave me an opportunity to do something I love. Stay out of trouble. Be present. Have teammates, work with them, grow with them," she said.
Rounding off the anniversary antics, the SYBL Court Takeover will see athletes get to quickly play on the San Antonio Spurs' home court later this season, a dream moment for many young hoops hopefuls. Additionally, a limited-edition anniversary t-shirt will be marking the event, available at Spurs happenings this season, as mentioned by FOX San Antonio. SYBL alumni are slated to be honored at select games, and volunteer coaches along with current players can score some complimentary tickets to Spurs home games.
