Visitors planning to spend their Tuesday at the San Antonio Zoo had to change their plans as unexpected floodwaters forced the iconic attraction to temporarily shut doors to the public. After a deluge besieged the area, zoo officials declared an emergency closure, ensuring that their primary concern was the welfare of their guests and the myriad species sheltered within the zoo’s confines. As per the announcement on the zoo's Instagram page, regular activities are expected to resume tomorrow, given the retreat of the floodwaters.
Despite the abrupt interruption caused by nature’s whim, zoo representatives assured patrons and the concerned public alike that the animals and staff, having worked through the stormy morning, remained unharmed. "It was a tough decision to make but the safety of our guests and staff ... is our No. 1 priority," Debbie Rios-Vaskike shared in a statement obtained by My San Antonio. With the zookeepers’ dedication under the inclement weather, the creatures under their care experienced minimal disruption.
The inclement weather, leading to what was termed 'minor flooding' by local sources, highlighted the zoo's preparedness for such events. The zoo's closure serves as a precautionary tale of the unpredictability of the elements and acts as a testament to the foresighted protocols in place to safeguard both human and the animal inhabitants of this cherished city institution. The park typically operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday-Friday and extends its closing time to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, but the flood forced a deviation from this routine.
As the city awaits the zoo's reopening, San Antonio Zoo's commitment to safety and preservation amidst the challenges posed by nature’s volatile expressions stands affirmed. While the park will resume regular hours soon, zoo enthusiasts and families looking to engage with wildlife must wait for the waters to recede and for normalcy to return to the beloved zoological gardens. Following the damp interruption, the park will reopen, as indicated by the San Antonio Zoo officials to KSAT, inviting visitors back to explore its diverse range of exhibits and educational programs.
