Robert Brians, the father who, in an alarming act of desperation amidst a divorce and custody battle, intentionally drove his car off Sunset Cliffs with his two-year-old twin daughters inside, has been sentenced to 31 years in California state prison. As confirmed by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Brian pleaded guilty to a litany of charges, including attempted murder and child abuse, on August 9.
The decision to forcefully end the lives of his children, according to DA Summer Stephan, was to inexplicably hurt his spouse, marking a deplorable deviation from the responsibilities of parenthood. The sentencing comes after Brian had illegally taken the children from his parents in a bid to supposedly send the girls to "Heaven". At the same time, he would be left to "wait in Hell" for his estranged wife, as reported by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. "Attempting to kill your innocent children to hurt your spouse is beyond despicable," Stephan stated.
At the preliminary hearing in 2021, Jenna Brians provided a harrowing account of exchanging text messages and a distressing Facetime call with Brians before the incident, culminating in his ominous final message. Her testimony illustrated a chilling picture of domestic violence, which can manifest in multiple ways ranging from physical and sexual abuse to psychological mistreatment and financial control.
Recognizing the prevailing issue of abuse in its many forms, the District Attorney urged victims or those aware of such instances to seek help immediately. The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 and resources available on the DA's website can offer necessary assistance. Additionally, One Safe Place, The North County Family Justice Center, provides an integrated hub of support services, as stated in the San Diego County District Attorney's Office official announcement.
