San Diego City Attorney Mara W. Elliott and the Consul General of Mexico, Alicia G. Kerber-Palma, have inked an accord aiming to extend protections and assistance to a greater number of domestic violence victims. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) fortifies the alliance between the San Diego City Attorney's Office and the Mexican Consulate, assuring Mexican nationals in San Diego receive consistent support, as reported by the City of San Diego press release.
YSP, the linchpin for the city's domestic violence services, operates from Downtown San Diego, offering free and confidential resources. Caring for victims regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, income, zip code, and immigration status, YSP embodies the city's dedication to those in crisis. City Attorney Mara W. Elliott remarked on the imperative to assist survivors, stating, "When survivors of domestic violence make the heroic decision to leave their abusers, we have a moral obligation to give them every service available to help them get their lives back on track," as per the city's announcement.
The renewed MOU signals a continued effort in both legal and social spheres, encompassing workshops, resource sharing, and establishing cooperative networks serving survivors. This initiative is cost-free to both the Consulate and the individuals it aids, underscoring the intertwined commitment of both entities to uphold human rights and empower victims of violence. Consul General Kerber-Palma cited the symbolic nature of the collaboration, especially in light of political advancements in Mexico, "This partnership is a reflection of the importance of protecting our citizens abroad, particularly as we make historic strides with the first female president of Mexico," as per the same announcement.
The services offered under this agreement are extensive and pivotal, ranging from legal assistance to emotional support. Victims can rely on YSP for a plethora of services, such as personal safety planning, housing support, and even specialized services for sex trafficking survivors. The announcement's timing is especially relevant, arriving just as Domestic Violence Awareness Month is about to commence. Individuals seeking help or who know someone in need can contact YSP at (619) 533-6000 for support and resources.
