San Francisco's ongoing battle with retail theft has seen another development as 49-year-old Mark Farmer faces multiple charges related to a series of incidents across the city. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Farmer has been linked to thefts in Union Square and other locations, as highlighted in a press release from the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. The crimes date back to December 2023.
On Tuesday, Farmer was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to an assortment of charges, including six counts of second-degree commercial burglary, four counts of grand theft, and 11 counts of shoplifting, according to the same press release. The arrest followed investigations into attempts to purloin merchandise worth nearly $18,000 from retailers such as Bloomingdales and Lululemon. Farmer was apprehended by the San Francisco Police last Wednesday.
With the city’s retail sector feeling the weight of such crimes, DA Jenkins emphasized the need for accountability. "My office will do everything we can to ensure that brazen retail thieves are held accountable for their crimes that impact not only the businesses but also the communities that they serve," she said in the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Acknowledgment was also given to the San Francisco Police Department for their role in tackling retail theft.
Farmer's preliminary hearing is set for October 7. The court has set bail at $100,000 after the District Attorney's Office moved to detain by requesting unaffordable bail be set to protect the public sufficiently. Currently, Farmer remains in custody as the case develops. Despite these charges, the investigation is still active, and authorities seek additional information.
