Following a targeted auto burglary suppression operation by the San Francisco Police Department, two individuals have been apprehended in connection with a series of auto burglaries across various city locations. One of the culprits is a juvenile whose actions went beyond a mere crime of opportunity, as police suggest there was a premeditated intent to victimize tourists at notable landmarks like the Palace of Fine Arts and Alamo Square, as per the San Francisco Police Department.
The events began last Saturday when plainclothes officers from Central Station witnessed an auto burglary near the Palace Fine Arts. Law enforcement remained vigilant despite the suspect's vehicle evading initial attempts at capture through dangerous maneuvers. The vehicle described as one involved in the burglaries was later spotted by a sergeant, leading to a citywide tracking effort that culminated on the 800 block of West MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland.
Robert Lionel Sonza, 27, who is known to the SFPD as a seasoned auto burglar, was seen transitioning stolen goods to another vehicle and attempted to flee once intervention by police became imminent. Nevertheless, due to a strategy including a tire deflation device, Sonza was arrested after a foot chase post-collision at Piedmont Avenue and Pleasant Valley Avenue. The juvenile associated with Sonza was detained at a nearby cemetery. According to the San Francisco Police Department, a search of the vehicles involved brought to light items identified as stolen from recent burglaries, a burglary tool, and a firearm.
Police Chief William Scott credited the decline in auto burglaries, which have decreased by 56% over the past year, to the hard work and dedication displayed by our patrol officers, sergeants, and investigators. Sonza now faces numerous charges, including possession of a loaded firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and conspiracy to commit a felony. The juvenile was cited for theft of a vehicle, receiving stolen property, and related offenses before being released to their parents.
