San Francisco's Northpoint Shopping Center is about to see new life by introducing a Grocery Outlet store, filling the void left by Safeway's closure in May, as announced by Supervisor Aaron Peskin. The move is expected to serve the residents by providing accessible, affordable groceries within their neighborhood, an issue that has been at the forefront since Safeway's departure.
In a community where many have felt the pinch of having to travel for necessities, "The departure of Safeway has been a hardship for many people in this community who have had to go outside the neighborhood to find reasonably priced groceries and household essentials, like baby formula, detergent and diapers," Peskin stated, as per KRON4. The new 30,000-square-foot facility aims to rectify this inconvenience and promises to be a boon for local employment and commerce.
Peskin's office informed that the decision came after months of negotiations, with Peskin's focus on securing another grocery store to take over the space at Northpoint Shopping Center. Adding to community sentiments, Mike Zwiefelhofer, President of the North Beach Business Association, welcomed Grocery Outlet and lauded their engagement with the community, according to KRON4.
The closure of Safeway had left a significant gap in the struggling shopping center, prompting San Jose company Anchor Pacific Capital to purchase NorthPoint Centre and the adjacent NorthPoint Vistas apartments for $25.76 million, according to SFGATE. The managing partner of Anchor Pacific Capital, Anton Qiu, told the publication, "Our goal right now is to try and stabilize the center, to try to land another supermarket to activate the center for the neighborhood and Fisherman’s Wharf”. Furthermore, Supervisor Aaron Peskin highlighted the importance of the new addition, "It’s been months of negotiations to help bring all the parties together to address any concerns, but I’m proud to have helped secure the 3rd grocery store for my district this term."
