In a recent announcement from the City of Schertz, Councilmember and Mayor Pro-Tem Tiffany Gibson has stepped down from her position, citing health and family reasons as the main factors for her departure, effective as of September 3. Gibson was serving a term set to expire in November 2026 after being elected to the City Council Place 4 in November of the previous year, according to the City of Schertz official website.
Reflecting on her decision to resign, Gibson expressed, "This decision was not made without careful consideration," and "I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the staff, my fellow council members, and everyone for your support during my time in office," in a statement obtained by the City's official website, acknowledging the support she received while serving the community and suggesting a hope to serve again in the future, despite the unexpected end to her current term.
According to the City's official website, the bylaws dictated by the City Charter Section 4.06 enunciate that a special election must be held to fill the vacancy when more than a year remains on a council member's term; given that the deadline for adding a candidate to the ballot for the November 2024 election has already expired, the next available date on which to hold such an election falls on a Saturday, May 3, 2025.
As the city of Schertz prepares to appoint a new Mayor Pro-Tem at an upcoming meeting, Mayor Ralph Gutierrez paid homage to Gibson's tenure, stated on the City of Schertz official website, "On behalf of all of the residents of Schertz, I want to thank Councilmember Gibson for all of her service to our great city. We wish her well and all the best in her future endeavors."
