When the ground underneath Seattle opens to swallow a water main, the immediate fallout extends beyond the ruptured pipes and spilled water—it reaches into the lives of the residents whose taps run dry without warning. Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) knows this and has introduced a new system to keep people informed during emergency water outages: text message alerts sent as soon as an outage occurs.
The good news is that sudden water outages are rare. However, that’s little comfort during the crisis, which is why Seattle Public Utilities now provides immediate notifications. "Now, Seattle residents and businesses impacted by an emergency or unplanned water outage will receive a text message as soon as water service is lost at their home or business," the utility announced in a statement.
Here’s the process: when an outage is confirmed, customers get a prompt text with details about the situation and suggestions, such as checking SPU’s outage map or contacting their Operations Response Center. A second text is sent once water service is restored. This relies on SPU having the correct phone number, so customers are encouraged to update their contact information to ensure clear communication.
All SPU billing customers, including Seattle renters, are automatically signed up for these text alerts. However, those who prefer not to receive them can opt out through their SPU account or by contacting a representative. While the goal is to keep water outages rare, SPU promises to notify customers by text when they do occur, according to the City of Seattle official website.
