This fall, the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) is bringing back its popular Seattle Home Fairs with two events aimed at providing the community with essential information on home improvements and regulations. As reported by Building Connections, the Home Fairs are scheduled for the north and south parts of the city. These fairs are crafted to help attendees prepare for obtaining construction permits for any planned spring/summer renovation projects well in advance.
The SDCI has packed these free events with valuable sessions on rental housing rules, the permitting and inspection process, emergency preparedness, and more. Prospective renovators—whether homeowners, landlords, renters, or aspiring property owners—will find the guidance and information at the Home Fairs especially beneficial. "Whether you’re a homeowner, landlord, renter, or potential homeowner, the Home Fairs will have something for you," the SDCI stated in a recent announcement. They also invite questions on topics such as permitting, inspections, code requirements, and rental housing rules.
The first fair, taking place on October 5, 2024, will be hosted at Meadowbrook Community Center in North Seattle. It promises a series of lectures, including an introduction to the new prescriptive plan set for earthquake retrofits and a session aimed at demystifying the SDCI's inspection process. Renters and housing providers can also benefit from a separate lecture providing resources on rental regulations and fair housing laws. Attendees are requested to RSVP if planning to attend.
Taking the baton on October 19, 2024, the South Seattle Home Fair is set at the Filipino Community Center and mirrors its northern counterpart in offering an educational foray into the world of home improvement and regulation. Expect to receive updates on the city's new tree legislation, insights into earthquake retrofitting, and knowledge on rental regulations that could impact both renters and housing providers. Again, the SDCI recommends RSVPs to facilitate planning.
Fairgoers with accessibility needs will find both venues ADA wheelchair accessible, and those with other specific accommodation needs are encouraged to reach out to Wendy Shark at [email protected] at least one week prior to each event. By making use of the resources offered at these fairs, Seattle's community can step confidently into their home projects, equipped with the necessary foreknowledge to navigate the convoluted pathways of permits and regulations.
