The city’s efforts to patch up the battered exteriors of small businesses have hit a milestone with the distribution of the 800th and final check from the Storefront Repair Fund. Casa Del Mariachi, a popular vegetarian restaurant in the Pinehurst area, was the last to receive the $2,000 grant, wrapping up a program that has injected over $1.6 million into local businesses.
In a move to quickly aid businesses blindsided by vandalism and property damage, especially in the wake of the pandemic, the Storefront Repair Fund was initiated. The final grant, handed to Lilia Blas Sanches, the owner of Casa Del Mariachi, stands as a testament to the program's goal to safeguard not only the aesthetics of Seattle's neighborhoods but also the viability of its diverse economic landscape. According to Bottomline Seattle, the Fund aided owners to manage to keep their stores open, while also working to ease the burden of unforeseen repair expenses and promoting public safety.
The SRF's support extended widely, touching businesses in 20 significant neighborhoods throughout Seattle. Downtown, often highlighted in news segments for its susceptibility to property crimes, received close to a third of the total grants issued. SODO BIA, Alliance for Pioneer Square, and Seattle Chinatown/ID PDA were some of the local organizations that collaborated with the SRF, directing $250,000 into specialized repair programs and bolstering efforts with their expertise in managing recovery funds.
With the disbursement of the final check, conversation, and planning have shifted toward securing future funding to prolong, possibly even expand, the program's reach. The city is looking into alternate streams of revenue to continue the support crucial for the recovery and sustained health of smaller businesses. "We remain committed to fostering strong community partnerships and implementing creative solutions to address the evolving needs of our local business landscape," reads a statement from Bottomline Seattle regarding the path forward post-SRF.
