In response to recent security concerns, Shaker Heights High School enforced new safety protocols at their latest home football game against Brunswick. As reported by FOX8, the school tested metal detectors at stadium entrances to screen all attendees. This move comes after an armed student was apprehended before a game earlier in the month.
Metal detection systems, known as metra sens devices, scanned spectators before they entered the stadium. Cleveland19 notes that school officials have described these devices as noninvasive and effective for enhancing safety measures. The district's adoption of these technologies reflects an evolving commitment to community security.
Some parents expressed their shock over the new security measures yet acknowledged the necessity of adapting to changing times, as captured in a statement by the district's assistant superintendent, Felecia Evans, and reported by WKYC. "It is really truly about community," Evans said. "Shaker has a strong community and we work together to keep each other safe, and that's really our goal tonight."
Ahead of the game, the district communicated essential entry requirements for students and emphasized that a paying adult must accompany all middle and elementary school students. Despite the heightened security, the Red Raiders lost 35-3 to the Blue Devils.
