The case of Jesus Monroy, accused of murdering his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend Mia Campos, has ignited a firestorm in Gwinnett County after a judge granted him bond. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the defendant faces serious charges including malice murder, felony murder, feticide, and aggravated assault. The details of the case are grim; police allege Monroy lured Campos away from her home, strangled her, and moved her body to a wooded area where her remains were later discovered by her family.
In an unexpected turn of judicial discretion, Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers set Monroy's bond at $56,000, a sum that the Gwinnett County District Attorney's office has publicly criticized. "It is disappointing that Judge Beyers chose to grant a bond to this defendant, and one less than even his defense attorney proposed," District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson stated in a message cited by FOX 5 Atlanta. This sentiment echoes the anguish of the victim's family, with Campos' unborn child being mere weeks away from birth at the time of the murder.
The release of Monroy on bond, which occurred early Thursday morning, has particularly distressed the victim's father, Edward Campos. He brought a stark and painful perspective to the value the justice system has placed on his daughter and grandchild's lives: "If you break it down, for the $5,000, that’s $2,500 for the life of my daughter and $2,500 for the life of my grandchild - that’s insane. That’s unacceptable. I’m not happy," he told Atlanta News First.
DA Austin-Gatson has conveyed her office's intention to take further action in this case, stressing the seriousness of the charges and the necessity for such accused individuals to be held in custody. Despite her office’s lack of control over bond agreements, she assures that the pursuit of justice for Campos is at the forefront of their agenda. "I want to assure them that we will be seeking justice in this case, and we will prosecute this case vehemently," Austin-Gatson said to Atlanta News First. The DA's office expects additional charges to be filed and plans to present this case in front of a grand jury. Meanwhile, the Campos family is organizing a protest outside the Gwinnett County Justice Center in a stand for justice and in memory of Mia and her unborn child.
