St. Johns County, along with various organizations like the West Augustine Historical Community Development Corporation and the West Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency, held a ceremony last Friday at the future site of the West Augustine Health and Wellness Center. In a video from the Office of Public Affairs, community members and local officials celebrated the start of the much-anticipated $8 million project, seen as a major step toward improving local healthcare services.

Speaking to a crowd, St. Johns County Administrator Joy Andrews expressed a communal spirit, stating "This is a demonstration and manifestation of what we can do when we come together… to meet the fundamental needs of our community," according to the St. Johns County website.

Dwala Willis, co-chair of the West Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency Steering Committee, expressed strong commitment, telling the St. Johns County website, "There is no expiration date on hope," regarding the community's relentless effort to achieve their goal, despite the time it has taken.

Greg White, founder and president of the West Augustine Historical Community Development Corporation, mentioned the area's history of economic and social challenges as an important aspect of this development. In his speech, documented by the St. Johns County website, White stated that "a rising tide lifts all boats" doesn't apply when one boat has a hole in it. He noted that with the help of this health center, West Augustine is ready to succeed: "Together, we are gonna patch that hole!" Anticipation for the center remains high, as it is expected to begin serving the community in October 2025, promising better access to healthcare for the residents of West Augustine.
