Fort Lauderdale and other South Florida communities are solemnly marking the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks today, with a series of ceremonies to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. In Fort Lauderdale, a remembrance ceremony is slated to take place this morning outside the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum, as reported by NBC Miami.
As per tradition, the Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Honor Guards, along with the Black Pearl Pipes and Drums, will be to participating in the ceremony. This half-hour event is expected to commence at around 9:30 a.m., inviting the community to join in the moment of silence and reflection.
To extend the observance across the region, other memorials and gatherings are also occurring throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. WSVN reports a list of services, including an 8 a.m. ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where artifacts from the 2001 attacks are permanently displayed, and a similar event held by the City of Miramar, featuring steel columns from the World Trade Center.
Additionally, Miami Beach is hosting a joint observance by its fire and police departments, complete with a flag-lowering ceremony to honor the memory of the 9/11 victims. Over in S.W. Miami-Dade, a ceremony hosted by local police and fire rescue, in collaboration with the U.S. Southern Command, will tribute to fallen law enforcement officers, firefighters, and military personnel. These ceremonies, alongside many others, are acting as touchpoints for the community to collectively remember and to potentially heal.
