A stretch of street in South Miami-Dade has been renamed to honor local leader Rev. Dr. Jose E. Hernandez. Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee and the Agape community gathered on Friday for a ceremony recognizing Dr. Hernandez's transformative work in the county. A section of Southwest 227th Street is now officially designated as “Dr. Jose Hernandez Street,” according to a Miami-Dade County release.

The ceremony at the Agape Network Main Campus brought community members together to celebrate the renaming and acknowledge Dr. Hernandez's efforts to combat drugs and crime through faith and rehabilitation. Since founding South Florida Jail Ministries and Agape Network in 1983, he has consistently promoted recovery and wellness, which led to Commissioner McGhee’s sponsorship of the resolution earlier this year. Dr. Hernandez's leadership at Agape Network, a nationally accredited health center and rehabilitation facility, has significantly impacted District 9 and the wider county, leading to the street naming in recognition of his dedicated service.

In the spirit of collaboration, Commissioner McGhee invited residents to participate in the ceremony to honor Dr. Hernandez. These words reflect the mutual respect and gratitude that connect Dr. Hernandez's legacy to the streets and buildings of South Florida, now formally recognized in the geography of Miami.
