Violence erupted in a Splendora subdivision yesterday morning, resulting in charges against an individual for assault on a public servant, among other offenses. According to a Splendora Police Department Facebook post, officers responded to a family disturbance call at around 9:30 AM on Mel Ott Ct in the Splendora Fields Subdivision.
The situation rapidly devolved when, after arriving on the scene and although they were merely trying to de-escalate a potential domestic dispute and provide necessary aid, officers were met with resistance from a male suspect, who attempted to flee and assaulted an officer. The unidentified man swung at and struck an officer in the head, leading to the deployment of a Taser when he resisted arrest causing a commotion that was witnessed by the suburban community it happened in broad daylight at a time when children could have been preparing for school, families starting their daily routines.
Despite being Tasered, the struggle continued for several minutes before the suspect was eventually detained. "Once the scene was secured, medical personnel were called to evaluate the suspect, who sustained minor scrapes as a result of the altercation," the statement from the Splendora Police Department read. The suspect was then taken to a local hospital, where he was medically cleared following an assessment post-Taser deployment.
The narrative released by the police detailed the charges against the suspect, including assault family violence, assault on a public servant, and resisting arrest and detention—all charges that speak to the fraught moments captured in this quiet neighborhood turned chaotic, momentarily by circumstance more reminiscent of headline-grabbing confrontations often found in larger, less intimate urban theaters of civic life. Thankfully, the officer involved suffered only minor injuries and has since been released after receiving treatment, a last detail that slightly reins in the dramatic scope of an incident which could have taken a darker turn.
