In a strategic response to a series of armed robberies terrorizing Springfield since April, local law enforcement, under the guidance of Captain Trent Duda of the Springfield Police Detective Bureau and Captain Brian Keenan of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, teamed up with the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department to apprehend six suspects. On the evening of September 18th, four individuals were arrested in the act on Wayne Street, while two others were detained on Jasper and Dearborn streets, as per a report by the Springfield Police Department.
The suspects in custody are believed to be linked to at least 14 armed robberies, occurring mostly at package stores and convenience stores, during night hours. Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers, in a statement given to the department's official website, commended the precise and professional conduct of the detectives involved in the arrests and acknowledged the danger posed by the suspects, one of whom was armed with a machine gun that could have "caused a lot of damage."
Mirroring Akers' sentiments, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno praised the dexterity and courage of the officers and the Sheriff's Department for ending the crime spree and implored the court system to hold the arrested individuals accountable for the extensive list of serious charges they face. These crimes, the Mayor stated, imperiled not only the businesses and employees but also the wider community going about their daily routines.
Among the persons arrested was 22-year-old Javahn Resto, who is reportedly charged with 11 counts of firearm-armed and masked robbery along with additional firearm-related offenses, while 33-year-old Malwin Feliciano and 29-year-old Carlos Resto Jr. faced similar substantial charges, including possession of a machine gun and unlawful carrying of a firearm, according to details provided by the Springfield Police Department. The elder Carlos Resto Sr., 48, is saddled with several counts, emphasizing an array of charges from firearm possession to drug trafficking.
The intensity of this investigation is apparent from the wide array of evidence collected, which includes drugs, guns, cash, and sundry ammunition, all pointing to a complicated web of criminal activity. The crackdown on the night of September 18 not only thwarted another planned robbery but also led to a search warrant for a house on Dearborn Street, resulting in further seizures and an additional arrest.
