A routine investigation into a stolen bicycle outside a Publix supermarket in Palm Coast, Florida, inadvertently uncovered a sizable forgery operation. According to the CBS12 News report, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) was notified about a customer's new bike stolen from the entrance area of the Hammock Beach Centre location.
Upon reviewing the store's surveillance video, detectives were quickly to identify a suspect and disseminate a be-on-the-lookout alert. Not long after the alert, 23-year-old Samuel Muslaire from Miami was discovered by FCSO, riding the stolen bicycle near North Ocean Shore Boulevard and Camino Del Mar Parkway. According to the same CBS12 News report, when a deputy approached Muslaire, the suspect asked, “Why do you say that?” before being detained.
The subsequent search of Muslaire's belongings led to a significant find. FCSO deputies found 51 forged bank checks totaling $70,466 from no less than four different victims. The discovery indicated a broader scheme of identity theft and forgery. Moreover, deputies uncovered various forms of identification and debit/credit cards belonging to a victim from Orange County - another piece in the puzzle that suggested a grander deception.
News of the eclectic mix of stolen ids and checks came as a significant reveal after a seemingly petty theft. The incident has since snowballed into a larger investigation involving multiple jurisdictions, including the Orange County Sheriff's Office, as indicated in a Miami Herald report. Muslaire faces serious charges, including Grand Theft, two counts of Unauthorized Use/Possession of a Driver’s License, Possession of another's ID Without Authorization, and an Organized Scheme to Defraud, indicating the legal journey ahead for this Miami native may be as fraught as the financial harm his alleged actions have induced upon his victims.
