A late-night standoff in a Vancouver neighborhood ended tragically when a suspect was fatally shot by SWAT officers after allegedly firing multiple times at police officers and vehicles. According to KATU, the incident began around 11:11 p.m. yesterday when residents of the 5400 block of NE 71st Street reported a neighbor who was yelling and threatening others and may have discharged a firearm into the air. The individual, reported to be holding a handgun, also used a knife to puncture tires of vehicles in the area.

Upon arrival, the Clark County Sheriff's Office deputies utilized an Unmanned Aircraft System for an overhead view of the suspect, who appeared armed and moved around his property. At some point during the standoff, the armored vehicle used by deputies was fired upon by the suspect, causing significant damage to the vehicle, especially to the window, as received from a report by KOIN.

The situation escalated further when shots were fired into the air by the suspect retrieving a rifle from his garage. Attempts to establish verbal contact with the man failed, and as tensions rose, he reportedly began shooting at the armored vehicle. Eventually, in response to the continued threat and firing at the law enforcement perimeter, SWAT officers engaged the suspect around 1:20 a.m., resulting in the man being shot and killed.

Following the fatal shooting, two Vancouver Police Department officers have been placed on critical incident leave, reports KGW. This includes the officer who discharged their weapon and an officer who was inside the armored vehicle during the attack by the stride of a bullet that struck the windshield. An independent investigation into the shooting is to be led by the Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team, while the Vancouver Police Department confirmed that no internal personnel would be involved. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office will release the name of the deceased, and the officer responsible for the fatal shot will be identified upon the investigation's completion.
