A suspect in a Charlotte murder has been linked to a series of violent crimes spanning multiple states. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have connected the suspect to the January killing of 26-year-old Diana Perez-Barrera and two other homicides, including one in Texas, according to WCNC. The discovery came to light after Perez-Barrera was found dead from a gunshot wound in east Charlotte.
Local authorities responded to an incident on Turquoise Drive on January 19, where Perez-Barrera was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators tied the suspect to another deadly shooting that occurred at a gaming arcade center in Dallas in September 2023. The association was made after police test-fired the suspect's weapon and matched the casings found at Perez-Barrera's home to those in the Dallas incident, as stated by the Charlotte Observer.
Violence in Charlotte increased when a woman in her early 20s was shot and killed in an apartment complex parking lot. This is the 83rd homicide in Charlotte this year, up from last year. CMPD Major Gene Lim said the community was previously considered "quiet" with mostly property crimes, as reported by WBTV. The suspect, currently in custody, was transferred from the N.C. Department of Adult Correction to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on August 29.
